Postage goes up!

So second class postage is going up from 36p to 50p. To make it sustainable. It makes it sustainable, perhaps, if the Royal Mail is to run as a business. But surely if it is a public service it doesn’t have to cost so much and doesn’t have to suffer from the competition of email and from private companies handling parcels and bulk mailings. I think the push for privatisation is ideological and driven by a desire to see the market rule supreme. I lament the race to privatise these utilities and would much prefer to see the postal service run simply and effectively as a public service in public ownership. And I don’t think that has to be inefficient. If we want our national life to work we can make it work.
