Sorting out who creates our money (Banks or the Bank of England)

I want to get going on helping people understand about money creation. It is crucial to the welfare of the nation and of all of us. The best people at explaining the situation are a group called Positive Money

Basically, at the moment virtually all our circulating money that we live our lives and do our business with is created out of nothing by the commercial banks that we know on the high street. We aren’t allowed to create money but they are. It comes into existence when they lend money to people mostly for mortgages.

The money lent out didn’t exist the instant before it was loaned out. It wasn’t money that someone else had deposited with them. It is a huge privilege for the banks that they are allowed to do this and do it they do! Hugely … as long as the times are good and then they slam the brakes on if there’s a slump. It is very unstable.

Really the people who create the money with which we all deal and that we use to live our lives, shouldn’t be the commercial banks. Instead they should be the officers of the Bank of England, acting as servants of the public, and they should meet once a month to decide if more money is needed for the best functioning of our nation and its people. If so, they should create a bit of it out of nothing (which you can do) and they should give it to the government to introduce into circulation by spending it on something that really helps the nation thrive, such as infrastructure, science and higher education and technical training.

The bankers aren’t going to give way willingly. They have a cash cow in the current system. The only people who can change it are the politicians and they won’t do it because not enough people are writing to them urging them to do so. ie to make the Bank of England the sole creator of new money n the country.

So this is where your come in.

I am setting off round the country to stand in the high streets of the constituencies of key MPs raising petitions to ask for the banks to be stopped from creating money and to make the Bank of England the sole creator of new money in our land and urging them to get the Treasury Committee of the House of Commons to discuss it properly, using the insights of people who understand the need for such a change.

Who are these key MPs? Which constituency should I start with? ANSWER Ones near here in Birmingham where I can get there and back in a day. Then also constituencies of MPs on the Treasury Select Committee of the House of Commons. I will add a note of who they are at the bottom of this post. Then also top MPs in government and opposition and rising stars ie young, up-and-coming men and women who are still sorting out what they stand for and who wouldn’t be too embarrassed to realise that their way of looking at money creation has been false.

Do I Dick Rodgers need to be there? Actually – No! You could do it. You could download a suggested petition wording and make you own petition. I think a paper one (ie not electronic) works best for this and this stage. Here’s a possible way to put it. You could print out a few sheets, put it on an A4 sheet of hardboard or card with a rubber band to stop it blowing away. Stick a rubber band under each one and away you go. Be legal. Be polite. and when you’ve got a decent lot of signatures send it to your MP at House of Commons London SW1A 0AA with a covering letter (and a stamp). And you could let me know you’ve done it! and I would say,”Brilliant. Thanks. You’ve made a bit of history.” And if you are still in any doubt about how to convince people to sign have another look at the website of positivemoney.org or this bit of this website
